Posture

Keep a neutral posture, whether in a sitting or standing position:
  • The head is straight or tilted slightly forwards, it is facing forwards and remains in balance. It is generally aligned with the torso.
  • The shoulders are relaxed and the arms are in line with the sides of the body.
  • The back is nice and straight.
  • The elbows stay close to the body and create an angle between 90 and 120 degrees.
  • There is no twisting whatsoever of the top part of the body.
  • The hands, wrists and forearms are straight, on the same axis, and are more or less parallel with the floor.
  • The line of vision must be between the horizon and an angle of 35 degrees beneath this line of horizon (when you look at the screen, it should be at eye level, or just below).

Ergonomics

When the desk is in standing position, ensure that the following points are adhered to:
  • The height of the surface is approximately level with the elbows when you are standing (your arms are in the same position as if you were sitting).
  • The height of the monitor must still be between the horizon and an angle of 35 degrees beneath this line of horizon.
  • The keyboard and mouse are aligned in the same way as if you were sitting.
  • Wear shoes that provide sufficient support.
  • Consider using an anti-fatigue mat, if necessary.
  • Use a foot rest when you are standing, to help you transfer your weight, or transfer your weight from one leg to the other from time to time.
  • Make sure that cables, the power supply, the storage of equipment and the general layout do not interfere with the adjustment of the desk.

Time

Recommendations vary, ranging from an hour sitting per five minutes standing, to switching between sitting and standing positions every 20, 30, 45 or 60 minutes. Your healthcare professional can also provide his/her own recommendations. What is important is that you alter your position in accordance with your needs. Give your body time to adapt to the new routine. Initial studies have shown that some users have a tendency to resume the sitting position for the majority of the time, following an initial trial period. In order to benefit from the advantages offered by the ability to vary your position, you must make sure that you continue to actually do it.

Don’t forget that it is also important that you still take breaks from your computer in order to reduce eye strain, and also to vary the position of your head, torso, arms and hands.
